Veterans Day occurs every year on November 11th to honor American Veterans of all wars. Initially established in 1919 as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I, the holiday commemorated the armistice that took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, bringing an end to active fighting. In 1954, the Federal Government renamed it “Veterans Day” to honor all U.S. veterans. Hopkinton proudly celebrates our veterans on Veterans Day.

For context, Congress passed the 1919 measure by a voice vote—meaning there was an unmistakable majority of “yea” over “nay” (imagine that today!). It was a moment in Congress with broad agreement on creating a day now dedicated to celebrating and honoring America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

There are several ways to celebrate Veterans Day in Hopkinton. Our town hosts various events throughout the day, which are listed below. Please consider joining your neighbors at one or more of these events. If you are unsure how to recognize a Veteran you know, a simple recognition of the day or a thank you for your service is always appreciated.
