Effective May 1, and per State law, Hopkinton residents are required to limit nonessential outdoor use of water until September 30, 2023. Lawn sprinklers may be used for lawn watering two days per week, between the hours of 7:00 PM until 7:00 AM.

All other outdoor non-essential watering is permitted daily between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, but which day you may water depends on the precinct you live in. Precincts 1 and 3 may water on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Residents in precincts 2, 4 and 5 may water on Wednesday and Fridays.

Lawn watering on Saturday, Sunday and Monday is prohibited.

These restrictions apply only to residents connected to town water.

According to the Town Water Manager Eric Carty, a normal lawn needs only 1″ of water per week. If rain is expected residents are advised to shut their watering systems off in order to avoid wasteful water use.

Because the forecast calls for a warmer than normal summer, Carty expects that the town will need to bring wells #4 and #5 online to help meet demand. These wells, located near Donna Pass, are heavy in iron, which causes discoloration in the water.

The Water Department will be keeping users apprised of the current restriction through HopNews and other outlets. Additionally, there are signs located throughout town to remind residents.
