HFD Receives Enbridge Safe Communities Grant

Published on

Hopkinton, MA — The Hopkinton Fire Department (HFD), under the leadership of Fire Chief Gary Daugherty Jr., is pleased to announce that the Department has been awarded $2,500 through the Enbridge Safe Communities Grant program. The Enbridge Safe Communities Grant supports important community safety initiatives.

Community Risk Reduction (CRR) team

The grant was secured through the Department’s Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Team. CRR Team member FF Matt Berger played a key role in the grant application process. As a result, the funding will be used to purchase and install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for Hopkinton residents in need.

This initiative supports the Department’s ongoing efforts to reduce preventable injuries and fatalities associated with residential fires and carbon monoxide emergencies.

“Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are a critical part of a layered approach to home safety,” said Fire Prevention Officer Tom Poirier. “Early warning remains one of the most important factors in surviving these incidents. This funding allows us to ensure that residents who may otherwise lack these devices have reliable early warning in their homes.”

National statistics

National fire safety data highlights the importance of this program. Nearly 3,000 people die annually in residential fires in the United States. Approximately 59 percent of those deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Additionally, hundreds of fatalities each year are attributed to unintentional carbon monoxide exposure. This often happens in residences without carbon monoxide detection.

The Enbridge Safe Communities Grant program supports local initiatives that enhance public safety and reduce risk. The Hopkinton Fire Department appreciates Enbridge’s continued commitment to community safety and prevention.
